Dear Friends:
Our days are lengthening with the warming of the earth. Longer days mean preparing for the coming of spring and summer when we can warm both our bodies and souls with gardening, vacations and renewal. But spring and summer do not come without the cold of the winter. The silence of nature can be found in snowshoeing on a mountain trail or skiing in the back country.
The liturgical year provides us an opportunity to join with the silence of nature during the forty days of Lent. During this time we evaluate who we are, what we want to do or who we want to become. Beginning with Ash Wednesday we are invited to remember that life is a journey toward change-transformation. That transformation is our birth into a new kingdom- through our death and resurrection. Stephen Levine, says “We prepare for death by living every second, living life minutely, exploring our body and mind with a merciful awareness—to cultivate a deeper awareness through the development of a meditation practice.”
There are a number of ways we can develop a practice of awareness. Levine goes on to say, “Though what we are aware of may be incessantly changing, awareness itself remains a constant, a luminous spaciousness without beginning or end, without birth or death. It is the essence of life itself—it is deathless.”
St. Benedict calls his followers to awareness in the Holy Rule: “That the Divine Presence is everywhere.” The practice of meditation makes this awareness part of us. I invite you to enter into that awareness during the silence of Lent by exploring the various programs listed on this homepage.

Peace and Blessings,
Sister Clare Carr, OSB
