Benet Hill Scripture Study Program
At Benet Hill we are passionate about inviting others to immerse themselves in the Sacred Scriptures. We offer semester-long programs in both the Old and New Testament. Central to our teaching is an understanding of the historical background of Scripture. Our students will study the why, the when, the literary form and the audience to whom the books were written, in order to form an initial understanding of the sacred texts. Alongside this basis, students will be challenged to look at how the Word of God speaks to us today in the context of our lives. As a Benedictine community, we also feel strongly that studying scripture through the lens of the Benedictine charisms can provide us with practical tools for living a Christ-centered life today. Therefore, this year we begin a new program called "Walking through the Scriptures with Benedict", that will focus on the charism of "biblical hospitality".

The Book of Acts addresses the church's devel-opment from the time of Jesus' resurrection. To finish the semester journey with us through the exciting Book of Revelation with it's symbolism and apocalyptic nature.

Walking through the Scriptures with Benedict
Semester One (online self study)
Semester Two-Classes begin January 10, 2012
Saint Benedict felt strongly about the centrality of scripture in our lives. In his Rule we hear: “What page, what passage of the inspired books of the Old and New Testaments is not the truest of guides for human life?” (RB 73.3)
In this new study we will break open the scriptures using the Benedictine charism of “hospitality. This hospitality has little to do with our cultural definitions that often equate hospitality with entertaining. Biblical hospitality is grounded in understanding God as initiator, as host - the one who forever calls, welcomes, challenges and abides with us. Bibilical hospitality is not optional, but a radical, biblical imperative. Whether you are a scripture scholar, a former Benet Hill student, or new to scripture, we invite you to this time of study and reflection.
Semester Two: Biblical Hospitality
This new 8-week journey will study the scriptures through the Benedictine charism of biblical hospitality. This hospitality is far differ-ent from our secular definitions that equate hospitality with entertaining. It begins in acknowledging God as initiator – the one who offers us divine hospitality. It also challenges us to recognize that without growth in biblical hospitality our world will become increasingly hostile.
Dates: January 10 - February 28, 2012
