INTRODUCTION TO CENTERING PRAYER WORKSHOP
Program Director, Sister Therese O'Grady, OSB, offers us a wonderful example of Centering Prayer: "A gentleman shared with me recently that he likes being with his wife. He looks for her in the morning. He likes talking with her, being with her. I thought of my centering prayer time which I look forward to, I like BEING in the presence of the PRESENCE. The essence of centering prayer is the relationship with the Divine that is the focus, the call; BE STILL AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD (Ps. 46).
Fr. Thomas Keating is a founding member and the spiritual guide of Contemplative Outreach, LTD. Here he explains the depth of practicing centering prayer: "Centering Prayer is not meant to replace other kinds of prayer. Rather, it adds depth of meaning to all prayer and facilitates the movement from more active modes of prayer-verbal, mental or affective prayer - into a receptive prayer of resting in God. Centering Prayer emphasizes prayer as a personal relationship with God and as a movement beyond conversation with Christ to communion with Him."
THE SPIRITUAL JOURNEY SERIES - 2011/2012
In the Spiritual Journey series there are five courses of 6-week classes. Participants may sign up at the beginning of each course. Students who did not complete the series in previous years are welcome to sign up for courses as they are able. The required texts can be purchased at Benet Gifts Shop.
Course Materials: Open Mind, Open Heart: The Contemplative Dimension of the Gospel, Invitation to Love: The Way of Christian Contemplation, Intimacy with God, Fruits and Gifts of the Spirit, and Manifesting God; all by Thomas Keating, O.C.S.O., and scripts which accompany the videos by Thomas Keating. Follow Up Session to the Introductory workshop above This course provides basic instruction in the practice of Centering Prayer, a deeper understanding of the historical roots of this prayer in the Christian tradition and support in making this prayer a daily practice. Prerequisite: Introductory workshop plus books Open Heart, Open Mind: The Contemplative Dimension of the Gospel by Fr. Thomas Keating, O.C.S.O. and the script for the video. |

Models of the Human Condition This course focuses on the inner journey of conversion and transformation and examines the process of healing the human condition through the “Divine Therapy” of Centering Prayer. Prerequisite: Introductory workshop and Course 1 includes Invitation to Love: The Way of Christian Contemplation and video script |

Paradigms of the Spiritual Journey Develops the daily spirituality of transformation that flows from the consistent practice of Centering Prayer. Prerequisite: Introductory workshop, Courses 1 and 2. includes Intimacy with God and the video script. |
