Benet Hill Monastery and Colorado College are excited to present and exhibition of the illuminations contained in the St. John's Bible. Seventeen illuminations from this ten-year undertaking will be on display along with guest speakers and workshops. This bible is a special project celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Benedictine monks of St John's Abbey in Collegeville, MN. It is the first handwritten and illumined Bible to be produced since the fifteenth century. Presentations and exhibit are free but reservations are appreciated for presentations as space is limited. Please reserve group tours.

The exhibit officially opens Sunday, September 25, 2011 with a lecture at 1:30- 4:00 pm featuring Sister Irene Nowell, O.S.B., of St. Scholastica Monastery, Atchison, Kansas. As a member of the Committee on Illuminations and Text, Sister Irene brings her personal experience with the project to her presentation "Visio Divina" (a prayer experience with the Illuminations).

 

Irene Nowell, OSB, is a Benedictine of Mount St. Scholastica in Atchison, Kansas, where she is the director for the junior sisters.  She holds a bachelor’s degree in music from Mount St. Scholastica College, a master’s degree in theology from St. John’s University, and a doctorate in biblical studies from Catholic University.  She is an adjunct professor of St. John's University School of Theology, teaching Scripture both in the classroom and on the web and is a member of the Board of Directors of Benedictine College.  She is a past president of the Catholic Biblical Association.  She has written several books, Sing a New Song:  The Responsorial Psalm in the Sunday LiturgyWomen in the Old Testament, and Numbers, all published by Liturgical Press, and 101 Questions and Answers on Angels and Devils,  published by Paulist Press.  She is on the editorial board of The Bible Today andWorship and also writes regularly for other biblical and liturgical periodicals.  She is also a member of the Committee on Illuminations and Texts for the Saint John’s Bible.
