Remember the movie “Pretty Woman” with Julia Roberts and Richard Gere? We all fell in love with the romance, but under that story is a darker side. Julia played that part of a “call girl or an escort”- a glorified prostitute. Most women in this profession have been sexually exploited, enslaved and often sold. It is hard to wrap your mind around such happenings. Perhaps you want to check out the ads in the papers. You may read…”Promised “goods”-exotic, erotic experiences, “beautiful Asian girls, “gorgeous black girls”. All of these are linked to pornography, prostitution and human trafficking.
There are many individuals young and old who are interested in the cause to end human trafficking for the dignity for all, especially young girls and women. But this doesn’t just happen to women and girls, it also happens to boys and men. John Kerry says, “Trafficking in persons is an insult to human dignity and an assault on freedom.” And yet often it happens right under our noses.
Here at the Monastery we are working with the Human Trafficking Task Force of Southern Colorado to bring a greater awareness and education with a “Call to Action” in northern Colorado Springs. We are hosting 4 FREE educational awareness sessions beginning with Sunday, January 31, 2016 at 11:30 am and then on Monday evenings, Feb. 8, 15, and 22 from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm. Our speakers include members of the Task Force Board, law enforcement, survivors, and advocates. Save the life of a child, grandchild, or neighbor- come and learn what to be aware of and what you can do to help. There are practical things we can all do to end this modern day slavery.Sister Clare Carr, OSB, Prioress
